Why it’s done
- Your doctor may recommend a biopsy if he feels a lump in the breast and suspects breast cancer
- The mammogram shows a suspicious area in your breast
- An ultrasound scan detects a suspicious finding
Below are a few procedures that we use at our vascular center
Breast lesion wire localization
A Wire localization procedure is one which uses an ultrasound to locate and identify a breast lesion. Using the ultrasound findings the interventional radiologist locates the area of concern. It is a good tool for finding invisible and small lesions.
Our Procedure
An ultrasound exam will be performed to find the area to be localized. Ultrasound images will be taken to ascertain the area for localization. The skin on your breast will be cleaned then a local anesthetic is injected with very fine needle and breast lesion localization wire is placed in the lesion. This procedure helps the surgeon to operate faster with minimal cut and very less tissue loss.
Breast lesion clipping
Clipping is a technique where a small device is placed in the breast tissue to locate where the surgical excision needs to be made in women with breast lesions. The clip left inside is not harmful. If the biopsy leads to more surgery, the clip will be removed at that time.
Biopsy
A biopsy is done to help ascertain if you have cancer or another condition. A biopsy involves a procedure to remove a piece of tissue or a sample of cells from the mass under image guidance to be tested in a laboratory. The sampled tissue is usually examined under a microscope by a pathologist and can also be analyzed chemically.
Our Procedure
We use a number of image-guidance techniques to plan and monitor the placement of the needle during the aspiration procedure, including ultrasound, CT, MRI and fluoroscopy. This procedure depends on the nature of the lesion and its location.
