Varicose veins, also known as varicoses or varicosities – is enlarged veins, most commonly affecting the legs and are often painful in most cases. They mostly occur when veins get enlarged, dilated, and overfilled with blood. Varicose veins typically appear swollen, and have a bluish-purple or red color.
Symptoms
Most people do not show any symptoms and varicose veins are simply a cosmetic concern. In some cases, they might cause pain and discomfort or signal an underlying circulatory problem. But, you are advised to consult your doctor if you have any of the below symptoms –
- Skin: swollen blood vessels in the skin or discolouration
- Also common: bruising, heavy legs, itching, or swollen legs
Causes
Some potential causes for varicose veins include:
- Age. Aging causes wear and tear on the valves in the veins that help control blood flow
- Sex. Women are more likely to develop the condition
- Pregnancy. During pregnancy, the blood volume in the body increases
Other risk factors include:
- Family history
- Menopause
- Obesity
- Standing or sitting for long periods of time.
When should you consult a doctor:
Though the following symptoms are not life-threatening, you are still advised to make an appointment to see a doctor if you experience: achy, heavy legs, burning, throbbing sensation over an enlarged vein, muscle cramping and restless legs at night.
